Milk processors Murray Goulburn and Fonterra, who dropped their prices in May, copped further criticism from farmers struggling to meet their commitments at a public meeting at Congupna last week.

The ‘round-table’ discussion was organised to give feedback to federal departments on how dairy assistance was working.
The two big milk processors were blamed for the price cut and also accused of neglecting their suppliers who were getting more support from volunteer community organisations.
One Fonterra supplier, who is seeking government assistance, was scathing of her company which she accused of being opportunistic in dropping its milk prices soon after Murray Goulburn announced its cut.
Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie praised the volunteers who have been delivering support to dairy farmers.
‘‘I would have thought that both Murray Goulburn and Fonterra would have been wanting to help out their suppliers who were not eligible for government assistance,’’ Senator McKenzie said.
‘‘Whether or not Fonterra or Murray Goulburn see themselves as liable for the mess that we’re dealing with, I think a good corporate, community minded organisation, helping out those in need within your supplier base with simple things, like hampers or going into a school to help out with excursion costs, should be considered.’’
She said all parties — governments, community and the companies — needed to be working to support dairy farmers.
