California continued to slide, however, reporting milk production down 2.9% in May. This is the sixth consecutive month of production decline in the Golden State. Milk cow numbers remained steady at 1.779 million head, but milk per cow was down about 2 lb./cow/day.
Michigan continued its torrid pace of production increase, up 7.6%. That came as a result of 22,000 more cows in Michigan and milk production up 40 lb./cow for the month. Because of this jump in production, some milk was dumped in May because Michigan plants couldn’t handle all the volume.
South Dakota saw the largest percentage increase, up 8.9%. Cow numbers were up 6,000 head, a 6.1% increase. Milk per cow was also up 55 lb.
Wisconsin also production jump 4%, with cow numbers jumping 9,000 head and milk per cow up about 2 lb. per day.
