«The main goal of this rally is to show consumers that there are troubles in our dairy industry. Farmers are only paid 8-15 euro cents [9-17 cents] for liter [2.11 pints] of milk while all dairy products cost more than one euro [$1.14] in the shops,» Dovidenene, whose association is organizing the rally, told journalists.
According to Dovidenene, the problems in the dairy industry exist not only in Lithuania but across Europe.
«The dairy crisis started with the loss of Russian market. In 2015, the milk quota was lifted and the milk market was flooded with product and as a result farmers are now in a difficult situation,» Dovidenene noted.
In March, around 1,000 Lithuanian farmers protested in Vilnius demanding the resignation of the country’s Minister of Agriculture.
