Fonterra farmers will have to wait another week to find out who is contesting three farmer director vacancies on the board of the dairy juggernaut after a delay in the candidate assessment panel process.
Electionz, which facilitates Fonterra director and shareholder council elections, was to announce today candidates for the seats, created by the recent sudden exit of Fonterra farmer director Colin Armer after John Wilson was announced as chairman-elect, and the rotation elections of incumbents Wilson and director Nicola Shadbolt.
Electionz spokesman Warwick Lampp said this announcement would now be made next Tuesday because »a couple» of the candidates had overseas committments and had not completed the candidate assessment panel process.
This process is voluntary and involves a panel of governance experts assessing candidates on their suitability for directorship.
Most candidates choose to go through the process but some pull out after.
For this reason candidates are not named until after the panel process.
Lampp would not say how many nominations were received for the elections, or give any other details.
Waikato Times inquiries have confirmed as candidates Waikato University agribusiness academic Jacqueline Rowarth, Otago farmer Grant Cochrane and former Fonterra Shareholder Council chairman Blue Read.
The panel started its work on October 3. The elections, held by post and online, start on November 26.
The results will be announced at Fonterra’s annual meeting in December.
