Despite rapid growth rate, about 70 percent of China’s dairy producers are small sized farms.
«Private farmers and small farms are with low breeding levels, their average output is around 6 tons per unit area. And the quality is unstable. The administration is difficult and poor,» said Sun Guoqiang, vice chairman dairy association of Shandong province.
Many small farms have tried to cooperate with each other and hire professional managers to better manage their farms. But branding and regaining consumer confidence in domestic dairy products is challenging for small farm producers.
«Consumers still don’t trust our dairy products. Producers should do more on marketing their products, and open their farms to the public, so that consumers can have a better understanding that our breeding and products qualities are very high,» said Wei Lihua, vice chairman dairy association of China.
While domestic dairy companies struggled, foreign companies boomed. In 2015, China imported some 460 thousand tons of milk, up nearly 44 percent from the previous year.
