Australian Dairy Farmers president Simone Jolliffe said this past week had been “extremely disappointing for the dairy industry”.
Today Fonterra Australia announced it would cut its farmgate milk price from $5.60 a kilogram of milk solids to $5kg/MS for the season.
This means farmers will be paid as little as $1.91kg/MS for milk supplied in May and June.
Last week Murray Goulburn cut its farmgate price to a “supported” $5.47kg/MS with the money from the support package to be paid back by MG farmers across the next three years.
Without the support the MG price would be $4.75-$5kg/MS for the season.

Ms Jolliffe and the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria have urged milk processors to provide a “line of sight” for farmers with next season’s milk price as early as possible. She said having an idea about price would help farmers make decisions about the coming two months.
Ms Jolliffe said Dairy Australia had brought forward its Tactics for Tight times workshops earlier to assist farmers and she also encouraged the industry to support each other during this time.
