Canterbury dairy company Synlait Farms has boosted its earnings forecast by about $2 million on the rising tide of global dairy prices. The privately-owned corporate farmer owns and operates 13 South Canterbury dairy farms, selling to related milk processor Synlait Milk. The Dunsandel plant is 51 per cent owned by China’s Bright Dairy.
Synlait Farms said it would produce about 5.4 million kilograms of milk solids this season, up on the previous year.
The dry summer, which caused massive problems and drought in the North Island, was shrugged off by Synlait which has extensive irrigation.
The final milk price for Synlait’s milk solids was likely to be $5.80 a kilogram, up 40 cents on the original forecast, as the Global Dairy Trade prices soared 40 per cent over the past month.
At that price, its revenue would be about $31m.
The company took in $34.8m in revenue for the year to May 2012, making a $3.12m profit.
Banks expected the milk price for the 2014 season to range between $6.20 and $6.50, Synlait Farms said.
Expenses were in line with expectations and the company’s balance sheet would be strengthened by rising dairy-land prices in Canterbury.
Late last month Synlait Farms registered with off-market share-trading service Unlisted to boost trading in its shares.
No trades had yet been made, with a seller offering $1.15 for several weeks and the highest a buyer was willing to pay only 80c.
Another earnings update would be given to Unlisted in late June.
Half of Synlait Farms is owned by founders Juliet Maclean, Ben Dingle and John Penno, with the remainder owned by a range of New Zealand shareholders.
