The dairy industry says a free trade agreement with China needs to be a priority for the party that wins the election.

Australian Dairy Industry Council president Noel Campbell says Australia is missing out on international dairy trade because it doesn’t have an agreement with China.
He says our main competitor, New Zealand, is selling more product more cheaply into China because those countries have a free trade agreement.
«There’s a 5 per cent tariff that goes on top of our product when it goes into China. That’s a significant amount of money,» he said.
«They (New Zealand) put in about 10 times the amount of product that we do into China. So it’s obviously an emerging market and we want to be a part of it.»
