There are now 1.5 dairy cattle for every New Zealander as the nation’s herd continues to grow faster than the human population.

The latest figures from Statistics New Zealand show the number of dairy cattle has increased slightly over the last year, to 6.6 million.

‘Compared with recently released population census figures over the same seven-year period, the dairy cattle population has grown over five times faster,’ agriculture statistics manager Hamish Hill said on Monday.

The dairy herd has grown by about 27 per cent since 2006.

Meanwhile, the number of sheep fell by more than 350,000 from 2012, to just under 31 million.

This means there are now about seven sheep for every person in New Zealand.

The number of beef cattle and deer have also decreased.

The provisional figures come from the 2013 Agricultural Production Survey, which is conducted in partnership with the Ministry for Primary Industries.
