The Bruton based cheesemakers saw their vintage cheddars named as Champion and Reserve Champion at this weekend’s show. However just hours after judging had taken place two blocks of cheddar, weighing 20kg each, were stolen from the cheese tent at the show ground.
Rich Clothier, managing director of Wyke Farms, says he is saddened but not surprised by the theft.
«Our vintage cheddar is made to Grandmother Ivy’s recipe and we believe it is the best quality cheese available, a 20kg block of it is extremely tempting.»
In fact this is not the first time someone has stolen the Wyke Farms highly prized cheese. Back in 1789 Ivy’s own great great grandfather had a wheel of cheese stolen from his cart in Kilver Street, Shepton Mallet. This cheese, then worth seven shillings, was found in the possession of a lady who claimed it ’fell off the back of the cart’.
The Clothier family are offering a reward for the most recent theft of their cheese from Yeovil Show. The company are offering a £500 reward for any information that leads to the recovery of the cheese or the arrest of the thief.
