Hamilton-based milking machine manufacturer and distributor Milfos International is expecting to save thousands of dollars in productivity when it becomes the first business to use the city’s new ultrafast broadband network.
Rick Staheli, executive director of the dairy solutions business, said Milfos would switch from its standard copper-based ADSL2 broadband network at the weekend to Ultrafast Fibre’s partially built network.
Ultrafast Fibre is one year into a five-year building project directed by the Government but the service, capable of delivering speeds 50 times faster than standard broadband, is being provided by fledgling Hamilton internet service provider Lightwire.
«Until now, the woefully inadequate and outdated broadband network infrastructure in the Waikato has quite simply failed to keep pace with our rapidly growing and increasingly global milk harvesting solutions business,» Mr Staheli said. «This has significantly affected our ability to provide adequate IT service in line with the expectations of our personnel and partners, and has seriously limited our options with regard to cloud computing and offsite storage.» The new service would not cost any more and would increase efficiency.
Jeremy Barker, business development manager for Lightwire, said Milfos’ plan cost $330 per month and delivered speeds 10 times faster than conventional broadband. Faster speeds would cost more.
Mr Barker said Lightwire, yet to advertise its services, had another dozen business connections in the pipeline and one domestic one by the Hamilton lake.
