Dairy Crest has held the price it will pay farmers for liquid milk in August, while raising cheques for those on Davidstow contracts.
Davidstow contracts will rise 0.25 pence per litre to 25.34ppl (according to milkprices.com’s flagship price) while the processor’s liquid milk price will remain at 23.09ppl from August 1.
The price announcement for liquid milk means the company has held liquid prices for six months. Dairy Crest claimed the increase for farmers on Davidstow contracts was in ’recognition’ of farmers meeting new Davidstow farm standards.
Dairy Crest’s Mike Sheldon said: “We are acutely aware of the challenges facing our supplying farmers.
«Having recently met with hundreds of our farmers across a series of regional meetings, we know they have appreciated the period of price stability we have provided since March.»
He said the price announcements came despite production remaining at record highs and market indicators providing downward pressure.
Mr Sheldon added he was proud of the quality of milk the firm’s Davidstow farmers were producing.
The firm’s organic milk price will also remain unchanged.
In another positive development for the firm’s farmers, 95 per cent of Dairy Crest Direct (DCD) members have approved Dairy Producer Organisation (DPO) proposals. The announcement was branded a success by DCD.
Chairman David Herdman said: «I am delighted our membership across all contracts have supported DCD’s evolution in such large numbers to successfully endorse the first DPO in the UK.
«The legitimacy, accountability and rigour provided within a DPO structure helps to future proof effective farmer representation in what is such a challenging and fast evolving dairy marketplace.»
