The Australian Government is investigating if dairy product imported from New Zealand has contaminated local products.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry issued a market access advice note today explaining it had been advised by New Zealand authorities of possible contamination of whey protein concentrate exported to Australia.

The advice said: «It is understood the ingredient was exported from New Zealand to Australia for further processing into a limited range of dairy products».
«The Australian Government, through DAFF and Food Standards Australia New Zealand is working closely with New Zealand authorities to identify any food safety implications for consumers in Australia and other countries and to verify the distribution of any affected products.
«DAFF is also in the process of providing details of any consignments of potentially affected product that may have been exported from Australia.»
DAFF said it was unclear at this stage what the market responses will be to this incident and the issue may have implications for dairy products that have New Zealand why protein concentrate as an ingredient.
This comes as unacceptable levels of nitrates were found this week in two batches of Westland Milk Products lactoferrin powder sent to China.
The products were not sold to consumers and the company said investigations suggested the contamination was an isolated case.
The company said traces of cleaning products containing nitrates were not adequately flushed out before a new run of product.
The bacteria that can cause botulism was found in 38 tonnes of whey protein concentrate manufactured by Fonterra this month.
The contamination was attributed to a dirty pipe.

Fonterra was implicated in a melamine contamination scandal in China in 2008 that caused six deaths.
