Brazil wants to expand its participation in the global agricultural market from 7% to 10% in the upcoming five years. Representatives from the government as well as Brazilian agribusiness companies took part in the mission, which visited Vietnam, Malaysia, India, South Korea, China, Myanmar, and Thailand. Asia was chosen as it is home to 51% of the world population, in addition to its high growth and consumption potential, Maggi said.
Among the highlights of the trip were talks with Vietnam on the sale of dairy products and the reopening of the market for Brazilian beef, pork, and chicken. To meet this goal, Vietnamese technicians are expected to come to Brazil to inspect refrigerators. Progress was also observed in the talks regarding more space for Brazilian poultry in Malaysia. The Asian country is also set to send technicians to inspect Brazilian refrigerators and discuss the export of living bovine cattle.
According to the agriculture minister, the business between Brazilian and Asian entrepreneurs forecast during the mission have the potential of generating between $1.5 to $2 billion. «Whether or not this will materialize is another story. The governments build the environment, but it is the private enterprise who forges the contracts,» he said.
The minister stated that the government had a chance to show representatives from seven countries Brazil’s potential in agricultural production and the clearness of phytosanitary norms in food exports. He went on to stress Brazil’s environmental responsibility in production.
«We have showed that Brazil has social and environmental assets like few other countries in the market. When someone buys a product from Brazil, they are buying much more than a product; they’re buying the environmental and social package Brazil has to offer,» said the minister.
