Livecorp and Murray Goulburn director, dairy and beef farmer Lisa Dwyer was part of a panel discussing welfare at the Australian Dairy Conference in Melbourne.
She said there was little appetite for veal in the Australian retail sector.
“We could look to veal as a potential solution but it all comes down to economics,” she said.
“There will be no supply if there is no demand.”
Ms Dwyer cited research that showed dairy-beef raised appropriately had superior eating qualities to the traditional British beef breed but she said there was bias to overcome.
“(There’s) eating veal and that you have got to eat an Angus to get a decent steak,” she said. Emerging markets for veal in Asia would take time to investigate.
RSPCA chief executive Heather Neil said the low uptake of veal in Australia was due to the image of veal as “created calves”.
She said the RSPCA was developing a standard for veal production, from birth to slaughter, as a way to get consumers to trust the product.
