Global health care company Abbott Laboratories is to recall 2 batches of its potentially contaminated milk powder products in China, according to an announcement released on Tuesday.
The announcement comes after the New Zealand Embassy in China informed China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine that the milk powder may be contaminated with the toxic bacteria, clostridium botulinum.
The announcement said that the 2 batches of milk powder were packaged on the Fonterra packaging line, which did not go through a thorough cleaning process after having used tainted milk powder.
Batches of whey protein from Fonterra, the New Zealand dairy giant, were allegedly found to contain toxic bacteria.
«Tainted whey protein was not used in the 2 batches of products. The milk powder will pose little threat to health,» said the announcement, «but in the customers’ best interests, we’ve decided to recall and destroy the 2 batches of products.»
Abbott has started preemptive recalls of 2 batches of Stage 3 infant formula produced on May 2, 2013.
A total of 7,181 boxes of formula will be recalled, including 112 boxes that have already been sold. The remaining 7,069 boxes in inventory have been sealed, according to Abbott.
