When one of Emyr Davies’ two full-time workers had to leave the job after an accident, he found no takers for the role he advertised, and is simply unable to continue to manage the herd.
He blames the uncertainty of Brexit for the shortage of staff, with European workers returning home and few local people willing to work the long hours and weekends required on a farm.
In the video Ffermio TV presenter Meinir Howells goes to the sale as Emyr says goodbye to dairy farming and hopes for the best prices he can get in a subdued market.
Emyr said: “I will miss the cattle. We’ve been producing milk for many years. I looked at the cattle last night before going to bed. That was a big blow for me.”
Ffermio is the only television programme in Britain that specifically deals with agricultural issues, as well as providing all the news relevant to farmers and the wider audience.
It is a weekly magazine programme for S4C that discusses a wide range of topics from animal health to food production and conservation.
