Australian milk production continues to grow, despite falling global prices.
Milk production grew 1.5% in July compared with July 2013, according to the latest figures from Dairy Australia.
But the overall figure disguises major differences between different states.
Tasmania continues to see a huge surge with milk production there up 7.1% for July compared with the same month last year.
But Queensland production saw a big fall – down 8.1%, while production was also down in South Australia (-5.2%) and Western Australia (-0.9%).
Victoria experienced a modest increase (2.2%) while NSW showed a bigger increase (4.4%).
All Victorian regions showed growth with Gippsland up 3.8%, Northern Victoria up 2.0% and Western Victoria up 1.3%.
Growth was also spread fairly evenly across NSW with the southern region up 5.1%, inland/central region up 4.5% and North Coast up 3.1%.
For 2013-14 Victoria had 66.2% of national production, NSW 11.2% and Tasmania 8.7%.
